QUEER WAVE: the 1st Cyprus LGBTQ+ film festival takes place online 1-8 August

On the initiative of a few young Cypriot cinephiles and lovers of the arts, the first LGBTQ+ film festival in Cyprus will be launched online this summer.

Queer Wave is an international film festival focusing on LGBTQ+ cinema. In its pilot edition, the festival will be held online 1-8 August throughout Cyprus. For eight days, and free of charge, viewers from all over the island will have the opportunity to enjoy a rich programme of award-winning short and feature films, from a range that will combine fiction, documentary and animation.

Queer Wave is a response to the problematic, chronic absence of LGBTQ+ films from the Cypriot market, and will be focusing on films that have never been shown before in Cyprus. The festival welcomes LGBTQ+ individuals and allies, as well as artists, devoted cinephiles of all ages, and every other open-minded person curious to discover something new. The aim is to establish a platform where stereotypes on gender and sexuality are challenged, and where solidarity and freedom of expression are championed through film.

We hope that people all over Cyprus will embrace this initiative, organised with great efforts by the festival team under the adverse conditions of the pandemic. With Pride celebrations cancelled worldwide this summer, Queer Wave aspires to celebrate diversity and human rights through the transformative power of cinema.

The full festival line-up will soon be available at queerwave.com.
